How to Develop Phonemic Awareness

Playing Read My Hands Charades develops phonemic awareness — an awareness of the sequential sounds in a word. –Children cannot figure out a word by just sitting and watching an adult, who does the sound movements. To bring learning into the child’s own physical memory the child must make the sound movements themselves, mirroring the adult and adding the letter sounds. When the child (1) incorporates the sound movements into their own body and then (2) claps the word 3 times to solidify the word and then (3) uses the word in a sentence to add meaning, you will know the child recognizes the word.
